The Decoys wound down their tour , May 18 at the Slice by playing the best show of the year nobody came to, though they had eight more than their last Lethbridge visit.Matt Stanley of the Decoys at the Slice, May 18. Photo by Richard Amery

I caught them mid way through their first set as the Kamloops based power trio (Matt Stanley: Vocals/Guitar Sean Poissant: Drums Brendan Methot: Bass) played a mixture of originals from their new CD  “In Our Blood,” their previous CD as well as amped up covers.

I arrived in time to hear a raw and powerful version of the Tragically Hip’s “Little Bones” which they followed up with an older song, then a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover and the hot rocking first track off the new CD “Don’t Hesitate” which featured a blazing wah wah drenched solo.

Their originals  were reminiscent of heavier Soul Asylum, though they made a couple of Led Zeppelin tracks their own, though frontman  Matt Stanley didn’t really attempt  Robert Plant’s upper register. He did show off some solid Jimmy Page moves and guitar licks though.

their version of Sheryl Crow’s “ If it Makes You Happy” was an immediate hit with the audience.

They wound  down their first set with Led Zeppelin’s “ Ramble On” and promised to be back if the audience wanted them too. They all cheered the the audience had pretty much doubled by the end of the first set, so after a quick break, they came back  with a couple of new songs  and some cool covers including Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” and a wicked cover of the Cars’ “Just What I Needed.”
After playing a couple more songs from the new CD, they called it a night just before midnight with a couple more Led Zeppelin songs “ Heartbreaker” and “Living Loving Maid.”
