Vancouver alternative rock trio War Baby played an intense set for an intimate audience of about 15 people at the Slice, June 25.
They had a big, heavy, loud groove throughout and drew heavily from the well of ’90s grunge, especially Nirvana.
Drummer Kirby Fisher was amazing. He was a blur behind his kit, riding his cymbals like a fine tuned motorcycle.
Their was plenty of punk infused energy. Hulking frontman/ guitarist Jon Redditt hunched over his microphone and howled as if possessed by the spirit of Kurt Cobain.
Bassist Brock Allen mostly stood in the shadows, plucking intense grooves.
They were a force, playing a short, loud and intense set. He sang a song near the end. The tortured “God is Dead,” was a highlight as was the last song “Master Blaster.”
Whitby, Ontario singer Chastity, backed by Vancouver rock band Blessed, who played their own Lethbridge show earlier in the week at Attainable Records, was next.
If War Baby borrowed heavily from Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Chastity took on the Dave Grohl aspect of the grunge icons.
The tall, skinny Chastity and his long tangled black hair sang earnest and addictive, melodic Foo Fighters style ’90s and oughts style alternative rock.
The band provided layers of ambience as well as plenty of guitar riffs.
They all had their solo turns including a massive drum solo.
