Outrun the Arrow helps local man fight cancer

E-mail Print PDF

A decent sized audience of approximately 40 showed up  to the Owl Acoustic Lounge to say fuck cancer with local rock bands Outrun the Arrow and Supernaut, Sept. 14. The special event raised just over $2,000 to for Al Hawkes, a local man suffering from terminal Outrun the Arrow playing a Fuck Cancer benefit. Photo by Richard Amerystomach cancer.

I missed Supernaut, but was just in time for local hard rock band Outrun the Arrow, featuring the powerhouse vocals of Bridgette Yarwood, the beefy guitar riffs of brother Richard Yarwood and the driving drums of other brother Brendon (whose bass drum was illuminated with a series of flashing lights) and solid bass of Brian Kostersky.

Their set of a familiar mix of old favourites and now old new favourites beginning with “Stick It Out.” Bridgette Yarwood jumped all over the stage, howling into her microphone and showing her usual impressive vocal range.

They played a newer song “Weigh Down My Heart,” which is getting airplay on Rock 106. “ Caught in the Middle,” is always a highlight, which they played mid set and again during one of three encores they were called back for before ending the show before midnight. Another highlight was a punkish sing called “Falling Down.”

Another one of my favourites was “ Crashing Down,” and the third encore of “Passion and the Power.”

They wound down the set with a little bit of classic rock including Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll,” and an encore of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” during which Bridgette Yarwood subtly checked her phone for the lyrics.
Bridgette Yarwood noted they will be playing an intimate show at Plum, Oct. 21.
