This week is mostly about Canadian country music, though it also features some big alternative rock shows at Attainable Records, who have a busy week in preparation for their annual showcases at the end of the month.
Aaron Pritchett and Julian Austin kick off the country part of the week with a big show at Average Joes, Thursday, Nov. 17. Pritchett is touring in support of his hot new CD “The Score.”
Julian Austin is on the bill as well.
Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 on the day of the show. The show begins at 8 p.m.
The New Brunswick born, Calgary based Julian Austin hangs out in Lethbridge for an extra day to play a show of his own the next day, Nov. 18 at Coyote Joes with Tyler Wallace. The show will be a fundraiser for the Atom Tier 1 Hurricane Red Team. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
Local country band the Mark Hall Band plays Casino Lethbridge on the weekend, Nov. 18 and 19.
Canadian country star Charlie Major returns to Average Joes, Nov. 20 with Mark Maxwell. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 on the day of the show. The music begins at 8:30 p.m.
On the more alt country/ roots music side of the spectrum, Karen Romanchuk plays two shows this week. She is at the Mocha Cabana on Friday, Nov. 18 and plays a special noon hour show Christmas at Casa, Nov. 19. Jenn and Paul Kype play some roots and folk music at Plum, Nov. 19. at 10 p.m.
And The Lethbridge Folk Club presents Juno Award winner and order of Canada recipient Valdy at the Lethbridge College Cave, Saturday, Nov. 19 with Jolene Draper and the Inquisitive Few starting the show at 8 p.m. sharp. Tickets are $25 for members, $30 for non members.
Lance Loree returns to town as well, this time with Montreal roots songwriter Bobby Dove. They play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Nov. 18.
The Slice features a couple of late announced shows this week.
On Nov. 18, they feature a tribute to Gordon Downie and Leonard Cohen with Bruce Allen.
The next night, Nov. 19, the Slice features local hard rock band No Devil Lived On who play originals as well as covers of mastodon, Tool, Faith No More and musch more. There is a five dollar cover for the show, which begins at 9 p.m.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., Tickets range between $35 and $50.
Des Cite Des prairies features the Lethbridge Community Brass Choir the next night, Nov. 19. They will be playing a fun and inspiring concert featuring An American in Paris, a symphonic favourite written by the brother duo of George and Ira Gershwin. The story follows a WWII American veteran, living in Paris, and his love tribulations. Other works on the program include Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite, Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral from Lohengrin, Elgar’s Nimrod from Enigma Variations and more. .
tickets are $15. Children under 12 get in for free. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
Attainable Records features some of the weirder highlights from the Electric Eye Music Festival., Nov. 18. Edmonton based musician and Marlaena Moore plays Attainable Records with Saskatoon rock band the Faps and respectfulchild aka instrumental violinist Melissa Gan.
Doors open at 10 p.m. There is a $10 cover.
Attainable Records also features pop punk bands So Long Suburbia and From Six Til Eight on Nov. 20. There is a $5 cover for that show which begins at 8 p.m.
Attainable Records also brings in utopian space construct Tropic Harbour aka Edmonton’s Mark Berg, Nov. 20.
Mexico City experimental synth pop musician Loïc Zev is also on the bill. The show begins at 10 p.m., There is a $10 cover.
Saturday night is the night to rock with the Trews and Bleeker, return to Average Joes, Nov. 19. The Trews are supporting their new retrospectives “Time Capsule“ and “ The Vault.” They are sure to play their many hits like “Not Ready To Go,” “Tired of Waiting,” “Poor Ol Broken Hearted Me,” and may more including some new songs.
The Trews with special guests, Bleeker, play Average Joes, Nov. 19 at 8:30 p.m.
Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 on the day of the show.
And why not start off the next week by going around the world, Monday, Nov. 21 at the Yates Theatre where Jesse Cook will be playing world music from his nine albums including his latest “One World.” Tickets are $50. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
