Things got funky at the Slice for Amberlea Parker’s grad party at the Slice, June 1 with local funk rock trio Adequate.
Adequate will melt your face usually, but were in a pretty laid back mood at the beginning of the show as people started to trickle through the door. Nonetheless they brought the funk and the fun, as Scott Mezei on bass and the odd keyboard, was locked in the with groove of drummer Keenan Pezderic, who sang a variety of ”60s and ’70s hots recorded long before he was born in an impressive falsetto with a touch of country twang.
Guitarist Josh Thorlakson played a variety of catchy, groovy riffs and even used a talk box for one song. The first set included “Dance to the Music,” Dr. John’s “Right Place, Wrong Time,” and the Commodores’ “Brick House,” and some James Brown. to name a few. they even tossed in a funky original.
They definitely nailed the funky side of the ’70s and were even dressed the part in their finest vintage polyester ’70s slacks and shirts.
They tapped into their rock side with the James Gang]s “Funk #49.” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire.”
Their second set began on a quirky note as they opened with the theme from Shaft, which segued into the Fresh Prince of Bel Aire Theme. They showed off their vocal harmonies on “My Girl.”
