Taylor Ackerman has released his third album in as many years with “Doubt Freaks Us Out.”
“There aren’t any physical copies, so I’ve been calling them albums,” Ackerman said.
The album is in three different sections. The first three songs including a cover of JJ Cale’ s “Closer To You” reflect his experimentation with R and B, the next three are more folk and the last three are louder, more jammy rock songs.
“The first three just go together, the next three are all the same, more folk and the last three are more full band, louder, distorted and alternative,” he described.
“I wanted to share the Rand B styles I’ve been experimenting with. And one of the songs is an old folk song that I’ve had for 10 years. So it’s great to finally have a good recording of it,” he said.
There is one cover on the new EP— JJ Cale’s “Closer To You,” the title track of 1994 album.
The CD features plenty of local talent including Tyler Bird, who plays throughout the album.
“ If he’s not playing on the songs, he’s helped with the songs. We play together a lot, so we’re always collaborating,” Ackerman said.
The Cd also features drummer Dustin Gergel, Don Cassell playing blues harp on “Tangelope” and Danica Sommer adding background vocals on a couple of tracks including “November Pain” and “ Springtime Sunshine.”
“ I helped her record a new single, that she should release next year. It’s a lot of fun to collaborate and help,” he said.
Paul Holden holds down the bottom end on bass on the JJ Cale cover “ Closer To You.”
Ackerman said because the new music is only released online, he doesn’t have to worry about making physical copies.
“It’s more cost efficient that way,” he said, adding having access to his own studio helps productivity.
“ My studio is like an instrument. A lot of the songs I haven’t figured out how to play live yet,” he said, adding he is looking forward to playing the new music at the Owl on Feb. 5.
“ It will be very interesting hearing how the songs sound with a three piece rock band. These will be new versions of the songs” he said.
He has recorded several local CDs and songs in the Studio including the new Hell Diablo CD and Danica Sommer’s new single, t name a few.
