Calgary based progressive metal band Osyron hope their Lethbridge debut will be a “Momentous” occasion when they open local metal favourites Tyrants of Chaos’ CD release party for ’ “Relentless Thirst For Power” at the Place on Friday, Nov.18.
Osyron are starting a tour in support of their newest CD “ Momentous, ” which they released Nov. 1.
They are planning on playing some of that and tracks from their previous three albums they released during the pandemic.
“We’re 100 per cent pleased with it. It’s our best one so far. Like any musician, we hope our newest will be better than the last,” said frontman Reed Alton, noting lyrically the album is about personal struggle, trials, and personal battles and showcases the superb musicianship of bandmates — guitarists Krzysztof Stalmach (Solar Guitars) and Bobby Harley (Solar Guitars), bassist Tyler Corbett and drummer Cody Anstey.
“Covid was definitely an inspiration. Being stuck at home because of Covid restrictions definitely left a lot of time for introspection,” Alton said, adding they released three albums during the pandemic and then got to work on “Momentous.”
They play progressive metal and symphonic metal like Dream Theatre, Symphony X, Evergrey and Winterson, with a little bit of Queensryche .
“ I listen to Queensryche but they other guys don’t,” Alton said.
Osyron began writing music for a new album in 2021 and started recording drums in late 2021 at OCL Studios. Recording continued at CRM Sound in Calgary in early 2022 focusing on vocals, guitars, and percussion while the backing orchestration was composed and recorded at Sole Audio. The full album was also mixed at Sole Audio and the mastering was done by Maor Appelbaum.
The new album features guest spots from Stu Block of Annihilator and Into Eternity plus Polish musician Percival Schutttenbach, who created the orchestral, choral intro to the new album’s epic 12-minute long title track.
“ He created the perfect into to the song and we created the perfect closer,” Alton said.
The band has been together for a while, with the core of the band guitarists Krzysztof Stalmach (Solar Guitars) and Bobby Harley (Solar Guitars) forming in 2012 after moving to Calgary from Toronto. Alton and bassist Tyler Corbett joined in 2016 and Cody Anstey joined in 2018.
They are looking forward to making their Lethbridge debut, which is in the middle of a tour that will take them out to Banff, several B.C Dates and Manitoba and back.
“ We’ll play five or six songs from the new album and a few off our previous albums. It will be loud, big, bombastic and epic,” Alton promised,
noting they are planning tours of the United States and Europe in 2023.
“ That’s where our biggest audiences are,” Alton said.
“ I think Europeans appreciate us because our influences are a lot of the bands they listen to. I think they like it that we’re from Canada and are expanding on a sound that they already know. It’s a really cool mix of influences,” he said, noting they are a fun band to watch.
“ We’re a bunch of goofballs. We‘re have quite a bit of fun on stage which we like to blend with a variety of influences,” Alton said.
Osyron and Tyrants of Chaos play the Place, Friday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door, $15 in advance.
