Lots of Christmas, jazz and Windy City Opry this week

E-mail Print PDF

What’s going down in this town? All kinds of Christmas shows for starters.

But ease into the wee with a whole lot of blues and jazz.

Keith Catfish Woodrow hosts a blues jam at the Slice Tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Get a double dose of jazz on Wednesday, Dec. 14.  First,  Standard Time featuring Sheena Lawson play the Watertower Grill from 6-8 p.m..

After that, join the Owl Acoustic Lounge’s jazz jam with hosts HBO3 beginning at 8:30 p.m.

To paraphrase Doucette, if jazz is much too crazy, then Scott Davidson hosts a night of mid week live music with lots of local talent playing the Slice’s stage.

Scott Davidson has a busy weekend as he and  his band the John and Scott band return to Casino Lethbridge, Friday and Saturday.

Get ready to laugh at  Good Times.

Impromptu’s Queer improv returns to Good Times on Thursday, Dec. 15. The laughs begin at 7 p,.m.  Admission is $15. After that check out the Queer open mic at the Slice hosted by Fawns.

Erin  Wood brings the funny to Good Tims of Friday and Saturday.

Kick off the Weekend at the Windy City Opry at the Slice, Friday.  Dec. 16.

The Windy  City Opry celebrate their sixth anniversary with performances by host Shaela Miller, moody Calgary octet Deicha and the Vu Dudes and the Dark Wrangler.

Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Also in  a country vein,  The Joe Vickers band featuring Audio/Rocketry’s Joe Vickers band and The Wicked Grins play the Owl Acoustic Lounge, Dec. 16.

For the opposite to that, dust off that spandex and  break out the hairspray for Motley Crüe tribute Live Wire and Whitesnake Tribute Snake Bite  plus Steve McQueen who relive the ’80s at the Place. The head-banging begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20. The event is a fundraiser for Jamie Gray and her daughter, whose house burned down in July.

Also for your head-banging needs, Prog rock band Vessel, local grunge trio Switched Off and Trigmegistus will be rocking the Slice on Saturday, Dec. 17.

Train Wreck roars onto the Honkers Pub’s stage to host their open mic, Friday, Dec. 16. The next Day Laurie and the guys  host an open mic at 8 p.m., Dec. 17.

All of the Christmas shows happen on Saturday.

TubaChristmas returns to Southminster United Church for a free tuba powered Christmas show beginning at 1 p.m..

after that, stop by the Owl Acoustic lounge with the kids where the band Formerly Known as the  Karen Lewis and Pam host a Christmas singalong spectacular at  3 p.m. Admission is by donation.

My favourite local Christmas show, TJ Waltho’s A Charlie Brown Christmas strikes twice on Saturday.

Keyboardist TJ Waltho, bassist Paul Holden and Brad Brouwer plus guitarist Aaron Trozzo  will be playing a Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, backed by the film itself showing in the background at Spectrum Ale Works at  6 p.m. After that they take the Owl Acoustic Lounge stage. A local Ventures  tribute follows a Charlie Brown Christmas. Good Grief! If Saturday doesn't work for you,  catch them at the Slice, Thursday, Dec. 22.

If Christmas makes you want to dance, Unified Vibe’s Christmas social is at the Onion Bar and Grill featuring performances by Marty Funkhauser from LEMF, Verboze, E2po, DJ Fuze and Cricksta. There is a $10 cover.

And if you can’t make it home for the holidays or want to get a head start of Christmas, the southern Alberta Ethnic Associations host  a community Christmas dinner from 3-6 p.m, Sunday, Dec. 18. There will be music by the Bridge Brass quintet and Disney princesses for the children to meet. Dinner is free, however,  they are still accepting donations to fund the feast.

And if you need to do some last minute Christmas shopping,  I Heart Local Pop Up Christmas market  returns to the Owl Acoustic lounge, Wednesday, Dec. 1

Out of town, Bow City Underground, who played the Ten Ten Pub on the weekend, will be rockling KCS Pub in Coaldale  on Saturday, Dec. 17.
